Ups and Downs of R + J

Romeo and Juliet was very hard to me. If you were to read the book and read it for the 1st time it's like picking up a spanish book and reading it. For me to understand one line required for me to read the line over and over again. It was a very complicated story and I actually didn't understand it until someone explaned it. Having to do all that just took all the joy out of reading the book. The movie was alot more clear to me but i still didnt like it. it was boring and I just looked at it as a learning experience, not a joyful experience. The whole book was about a 15 year old boy and a 13 year old girl who couldnt wait long at all before they got married. They had to get married right then and there. Then they killed themselves over it even thought they had only knew each other for only 4 days.
On the positive side it didn't take long and it broadend my Vocabulary. It made me think about how to interpret life and what mistakes not to make.

Polished Journal

Something’s I wish that I could do and things that I wish that I couldn't do. One thing that I wish that I could really do is drive. That is about all because once you can drive you can pretty much do whatever you want and your opportunities expand. Nobody can really tell you what to do. Something that i'm glad that I cannot do is go to jail. Not being able to go to jail is a real plus in being young. Also in order to play in the Major league you have to be at least 18. That is another thing that I wish that I could. Even when I do turn 18 you never know even if you are good if you will get inducted into the MLB. Drinking and Smoking would be something that I wouldn't do but I could still at least say that i'm able to. Getting into Clubs, you all have to be a certain age to do particular stuff that in different countries you could do on a regular basis if it was offered. I don’t know what it is about doing this stuff and people think that they are "cool" when they are able to do it. Personally the Only thing that I wish that I could do would be to drive because it makes life so much easier.

odyssey test

1. What have you learned about Greek culture, values, and religion? Address the roles of women and men, honor and virtues, gods and goddesses, etc. (250 words).

Culture today and culture 3,000 years ago are very different. Most people believe in god but in the Greek culture if you didn’t believe in the gods and goddesses than it was considered sinful. Women, Men, and adolescents all are respected differently when if you didn’t treat people the same in our culture than that would be considered a wrongful act. Husbands’ cheating on wife’s occurred all the time but for a wife to cheat on her husband than that would be unheard of. Poseidon kept Odysseus away from Ithaca to show him that men would be nothing without gods. Greek men usually hunt all day or do physical labor. Women only do small and easy chores such as making food or washing clothes. One thing that mattered a lot in Greek mythology or at least Odysseus case was that he cared a lot about his family. The whole 20 years that he was gone all he could think about how much he missed Penelope and Telemachus.

Respect is everything in Greek mythology. If a man has no respect from anyone than not only will he be treated terribly but also his family will receive the same. Odysseus never gave up when times were terrible. As he got older he began to have doubt that he will ever make it back but he always kept his hope. He did everything he could to make it back to Ithaca even though Poseidon prevented him.

2. What resonated with you in reading about Odysseus’ adventures? Why? (150 words)

Odysseus always said that he loved Penelope but while he was gone he cheated on her twice. But what stayed with me the most were how many hardships he went through. He lost his boat and was stranded on an island after nearly missing Ithaca. Every place that he went he had to sail and he went to hell and back. He was lucky enough to get the two boats that were donated to him. He lost his 1st boat and his whole crew to Poseidon. He wines up on an island far away from Ithaca and stays there for 2 years. Finally he works forever to build a boat out of logs but Poseidon destroys that one to. Poseidon is the one who causes all of the pain that he encounters. After all that occurs something finally goes right for him when he finally meets his son for the first time in 15 years.

3. This epic poem is dated nearly 3000 years ago, why is it still relevant? (150 words).

The poem is still relevant because it is so good. The man that created the poem is now considered a genius. Also the Greeks beliefs relate to our beliefs. Our culture believes that if you commit suicide than you got to hell and the Greeks believe in the same thing. Even though our culture shares similar beliefs we find it interesting in how the Greeks use to live. The sexuality and the violence can all be related to how our culture is lived. The unsolved mystery of who homer was, when he existed, and did he write the odyssey. This story ends the same way every hero story ends. They have their ups in downs and then they come out on top. That is the same way that every hero story is even today.

Short Answers-

4. How would you characterize the narrator, the fictive "Homer" whose voice we imagine as singing the verses of the Odyssey?

I picture "Homer" as a strong and intelligent old man that was kept away from his wife for a while so he decided to create an epic poem stating all the pain and suffering that he endured in his on life. When I think of homer Simpson, I don’t think of the stupid man on the Simpson’s. Now I picture a man that thinks twice before he says anything and also a man that has strong beliefs.

5. What kinds of behavior are treated as contemptible in the Odyssey?

One certain behavior that is treated contemptible was when all of the suitors were trying to be Odysseus wife Penelope. Once Odysseus returned he soon killed all of them and tended to Penelope.

6. How does the poem represent mortal women? Since Penelope is the most important woman in the Odyssey, what qualities does she possess, and how does she respond to the troubles she faces? (Some of the other women are of note, too-Eurycleia the serving woman, the faithless maidservants, Nausicaa the Phaeacian princess, and Helen of Sparta, Menelaus' queen, whose elopement with Prince Paris sparked the Trojan War.)

Penelope makes all of her decisions in a professional way. She doest freak out or start thinking of everything that could go wrong. She is well respected because she is very pretty and also she is a queen. The Maidservants though were unfaithful because their sex cravings overruled the faith that they had in their queen. Eurycleia was the only maid that remained faithful to her queen.

7.How do Homer's gods think and behave? How do their actions and motivations differ from the conception of god in other religions of which you have knowledge? What role do the Homeric gods play in human affairs, and what is the responsibility of humans with respect to those gods?

The gods have rank in there own ways. Zeus is the god of all gods. There are a lot more gods because in the Greek mythology there was a god for everything that you could think of. The gods recognize that they have the power to determine every human’s faith so they use it to their advantage. The gods are able to interact with humans UN like the gods that our culture believes in.
